‘Urbanism’: exhibition at Billingham Art Gallery, 2006

Cities evolve in response to the need for shelter and trade, appearance and the speed of change dictated by climate and available materials.
‘Cortili’ depicts the buzzing, hot antiquity of a lived-in Mediterranean city, little affected by the 20th century. In contrast, within the night-time quietness of Perth’s glittering, up-thrusting business district, ‘Durty Nelly’s’ deliberately invokes past history. In both, the city’s vibrancy fails to mask the potential for isolation.
